Center for Student Professional Development
The UTSA College of Business Center for Student Professional Development (CSPD) believes that internships are an essential component of a student's college education. Internships allow students to obtain work experience, gain knowledge of business functions, explore a chosen career path, improve team work and communication skills, and increase marketability and value to employers. All business students are encouraged to seek internship opportunities related to their chosen field of study.

What is an Internship?
An internship is a short-term employment assignment, during the summer or regular school year that is related to a student's major or career goal. Interns work in a professional setting under the supervision of a practicing professional.

Students are encouraged to do multiple internships to get a feel for various companies within an industry. Many internships will offer a competitive pay rate, while others will be unpaid. Students are encouraged to evaluate their individual academic and financial situation before accepting an internship offer.

Types of Internships

  • Academic Credit Internship- You may earn academic credit for your internship if you meet all the prerequisites and the GPA requirement. Meet with your academic advisor to determine whether you are eligible. If you are not eligible to obtain credit at this time, we strongly urge you to do the internship anyway for the professional experience.

  • Non-Credit Internships- Interning with a company for a few months is a great way to gain professional experience. Even though the intern is not receiving academic credit, they are learning about the company’s operations, culture and core competencies. Many students choose to go this route for their internship experience

Internship Search Process
Students are encouraged to come by the CSPD and schedule an appointment with a College of Business Career Counselor to discuss the internship search process. Students can meet with employers on campus at various times throughout the year to discuss internship and full-time employment opportunities by participating in the following opportunities.

  • Attending the All-Majors Career Fair, hosted every Fall & Spring semester

  • Becoming an active user of the UTSA job board, Handshake. Companies post campus visits on Handshake.

  • Meeting and networking with employers when you participate in the Career Action Program (CAP)

  • Interacting with employers when they "table recruit" near the main entrance on the second floor of the Business Building

  • Attending panel discussions, networking events and guest lectures sponsored by the CSPD and the College of Business
