College of Business staff members participated in the annual Komen Race for the Cure walk on May 1. Participants included Hope De Leon and her daughter Bronce; Lisa Marie Gomez; Barbara Jackson; Mary Kalicki and her daughter Katy; and Melisa Perez-Trevino and her daughter Ariana.

  Knowledge Forum Breakfast May 25 to Address "The Future of Health Care"

Knowledge Forum Breakfast"The Future of Health Care" will be the topic for the UTSA College of Business Knowledge Forum breakfast on May 25. The breakfast will begin at 8 a.m. with the program following at 8:30 a.m. in the Business Building University Room (2.06.04) on the UTSA Main Campus.

Panelists will be Thora Jackson, Texas Medical Group Management Association; Bruce Mitchell, Oppenheimer Blend Harrison and Tate Inc.; Armando Polanco, Texas Benefit; and William Rascoe, retired health care executive.

Tickets are $20 for individuals and $15 for UTSA alumni; table sponsorships are $500. Register at the UTSA College of Business website or call 210-458-7311.

The UTSA College of Business offers an MBA concentration in the business of health focused on the financial and managerial aspects of health care management. Taught by academic professionals as well as practitioners from the health care community, the program provides a strong academic foundation for a successful career in health care management.



  Ramos Named Director of Student Services in Center for Student Professional Development

Joey Ramos, Director of Student ServicesThe Center for Student Professional Development in the UTSA College of Business has named Julio J. Ramos as the new Director of Student Services.

He comes to the College of Business having previously served as the Assistant Director for UTSA Orientation and Family Programs since 2006.   

Julio will be responsible for the center's H-E-B Career Action Program and the Business Scholars Program. He will also advise the Business Student Council and develop new student leadership programming.

Originally from Del Rio, TX, Julio received his BBA in management from UTSA and MBA in marketing from Our Lady of the Lake University. 


College's Briefcase Brigade Wins First Place in the Battle of Flowers Parade

COB Briefcase BrigadeFor the third straight year, the UTSA College of Business Briefcase Brigade won first place in the amusements category during the Battle of Flowers parade in April.

The brigade, which was comprised of business faculty, staff students and alumni, performed a "precision" briefcase dance routine to the song "Taking Care of Business." The group was led by Shavonne Conroy, singer, actress and daughter of former accounting faculty member Dr. Russell Briner.

The brigade also participated in the King William parade and received honorable mention as a first-time entry.

College Faculty and Staff Honored

COB Faculty Award RecipientsTen College of Business faculty members were honored for excellence in the areas of teaching, research and service at the College Awards Reception April 29.

Dr. Palani-Rajan Kadapakkam, professor of finance and U.S. Global Investors, Inc. Fellow, received the E. Lou Curry Teaching Excellence Award. Dr. Allen Zhang, assistant professor of marketing, was named the recipient of the Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award for Tenure-Track Faculty. The Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award for Non-Tenure-Track Faculty was presented to Ermine Orta, lecturer in management science and statistics. Orta is also the recipient of the university’s award for core curriculum teaching excellence.

In the area of research excellence, Dr. John Wald, associate professor of finance, was named the Col. Jean Piccione and Lt. Col. Philip Piccione Endowed Research Award recipient. Dr. Ashok Lalwani, assistant professor of marketing, was the recipient of the Dean’s Research Excellence Award for Tenure-Track Faculty. He was also the recipient of the university's award for research excellence.

Recognizing a career of service to UTSA, Dr. Keith Fairchild, associate professor of finance, received the Patrick J. Clynes Service Award. Daniel Tablada, lecturer II in marketing, was named the recipient of the Dean’s Excellence Award for University Service for Non-Tenure-Track Faculty. Tablada was also the recipient of the university’s award for university service. Dr. Pamela Smith, associate professor of accounting, was the recipient of the Dean’s Excellence Award for Community Service.

Highlighting the strategic importance of international issues, the college awarded the Dean’s Excellence Award for Advancing Globalization to Dr. Hamid Beladi, professor of economics and IBC Bank Senior Faculty Fellow.

Finally, Dr. Jan Clark, professor of information systems, received the college’s Endowed 1969 Commemorative Faculty Award for Overall Faculty Excellence. This award honors a faculty member for their accomplishments in teaching, research and service.

Peter Morales, assistant director of graduate business career services, was the recipient of the Dean’s Excellence Award for Community Service and Outreach.
